How spam and virus filtering work

Filtering happens in two stages: blocked email and filtered email. Blocked email is stopped before it reaches your mailbox. If a message cannot be blocked outright, content filtering checks it and routes likely spam to your spam folder.

Blocked email

We block email from sources widely known for sending spam or malware. This can include compromised servers and bulk-sending infrastructure. We also block attachment types that are commonly used to deliver malicious software.

Filtered email

Messages that pass the initial block checks are then evaluated using content filtering. This analyzes patterns in message structure and content and leverages broader reporting signals (spam, phishing, malware) to improve accuracy over time.
